You want to publish your web pages on an Internet server with its unique IP-address (see webhosting). However, the Internet community rarely uses an IP-address to find a website. It is easier to remember the name of the website (also called the domain name) than a string of numbers. Viewing it from the other side, the domain name designates your virtual estate on the Internet. You need to register this name at a registrar for the world to know that it belongs to you. This domain name comprises of three elements:

www.mydomain.y

  The www- prefix denotes the World Wide Web
  “mydomain” is the name of your domain (or website), e.g. ontowebmedia
  y is the suffix and may again consist of one or more parts eg. .com, .co.uk or .co.za as explained below.

There are different suffixes that are internationally recognised and regulated by ICANN (The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers). The different countries have their own registrars and the suffix will provide you with information about the country and the entity that owns the domain name. Common USA suffixes are .com (commercial), .biz (business), .net (networks), .org (organization). Domains registered in many countries have a multipart domain name, such as .co.za (a company in South Africa), .gov.za (South African government) or .co.uk (a company in the U.K.). Countries in Europe normally do not differentiate between the types of organizations; they just indicate the country such as .nl (Netherlands), .be (Belgium), .de (Germany) or .eu (Europe), for example moerstaal.nl or campingkiezen.eu. Although the suffix was intended to indicate the country of origin, it is not always the case. It only designates the country (and thus the registrar) where the domain name is registered. It is up to you to register a .com, even if you are living in Russia.

The registration fee depends very much on the company that is handling the registration on your behalf. Basically any company in the world can registrar a domain name for you in your preferred country. Registration should be renewed annually.
